Shanxi Province, abbreviated as “Jin”, has Taiyuan as its capital. Located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River Basin, it borders Hebei Province to the east; faces Shaanxi Province and Henan Province to the west and south; and adjoins Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the north. Shanxi Province governs 11 prefecture‑level cities, including 26 municipal districts, 11 county‑level cities and 80 counties.
Shanxi is one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation. It is the cradle of opera culture, the core and epitome of Great Wall culture, a major center of stone‑age culture, and a premier region of Buddhist culture, with a recorded history of more than 3,000 years.
Protected by two natural barriers — the Taihang Mountains to the east and the Lüliang Mountains to the west — Shanxi is known as a “land of natural peril and rivers”. It is an old revolutionary base area and an important gathering place of red cultural resources.
Shanxi is a treasure trove of ancient Chinese architecture. The province currently preserves 54,000 immovable cultural relics, 28,000 ancient architectural structures, more than 12,000 painted sculptures and over 50,000 square meters of murals dating from the Tang Dynasty onwards, ranking first in China. It is honored as the “Museum of Ancient Chinese Architectural Art” and “China’s No.1 Province for Ancient Architecture”.
Mountainous terrain dominates Shanxi’s natural landscape, with famous mountains spread across the entire province. They include:
Mount Heng, the Northern Mountain among China’s Five Great Mountains
Mount Wutai, the foremost of China’s Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains
North Mount Wudang, a renowned Taoist sacred site
Mount Wulao, known for its pleasant climate
The Taihang Mountains, featuring well‑developed karst landforms
Mount Li, preserving rare primeval forests in North China
Mount Lingkong, covered with dense pine forests
Mount Huo, the Central Accomplished Mountain among China’s Five Accomplished Mountains
Guandi Mountain, Guancen Mountain and Luya Mountain, habitats of the brown‑eared pheasant, a first‑class national protected animal
The Datong Volcanic Group, one of the earliest studied volcanic clusters in China
As of February 2023, there are 312 national A‑level tourist attractions in Shanxi.
