The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is situated in southern China, east of the Pearl River Estuary. It faces Macao across the sea to the west, borders Shenzhen to the north, and adjoins the Wanshan Archipelago of Zhuhai to the south. Its territory covers Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and the surrounding 262 islands. The land area is 1114.57 square kilometers, the sea area is 1640.40 square kilometers, with a total area of 2754.97 square kilometers.By the end of 2024, the total population was 7.5342 million. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated regions in the world, ranks first globally in life expectancy, and fourth in the Human Development Index.
After World War II, Hong Kong experienced rapid economic and social development. It not only became one of the “Four Asian Tigers” but also evolved into one of the world’s most prosperous, economically advanced regions with the highest living standards. On July 1, 1997, the Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was established. The Central Government exercises overall jurisdiction over Hong Kong. Hong Kong maintains its original capitalist system unchanged and enjoys a high degree of autonomy in all affairs except foreign affairs and national defense. It participates in international organizations and conferences under the name of “Hong Kong, China”. The basic state policies of the Chinese government are “one country, two systems”, “Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong” and a high degree of autonomy.

Every year, Hong Kong hosts a wide range of cultural, recreational and sports events. Major ones include the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Art Basel Hong Kong, Hong Kong International Film Festival, Le French May, Chinese Opera Festival, International Arts Carnival, Hong Kong Sevens, Cricket Sixes and international horse races.
In 2025, the total number of visitor arrivals to Hong Kong reached 49.9 million, among which mainland visitors accounted for about 74%, and the share of overseas visitors rose to 26%. The HKSAR Government announced that it will continue to promote the mega-events economy in 2026, planning to host star concerts, Lunar New Year celebrations, the Hong Kong Sevens and other events. Tourism is one of the key industries in Hong Kong’s economy.
