Travel Guide to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region: Exploring the “Six Wonders” — Grasslands, Ancient Relics, Deserts, Lakes, Forests and Folk Customs

Inner Mongolia stretches diagonally from northeast to southwest in a long and narrow shape. Its landform is dominated by plateaus, with most areas over 1,000 meters above sea level, and it features a temperate continental monsoon climate.
The name “Inner Mongolia” originally derived from “Inner Dzasa Mongolia”. In 1206, Genghis Khan founded the Mongol Khanate. After the fall of the Yuan Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty established more than 20 Mongolian garrisons in western Liaodong, southern southern Mongolia and other areas. In 1664, the Kangxi Emperor divided the region into Inner Dzasa Mongolia and Outer Dzasa Mongolia with the Gobi Desert as the boundary. In May 1947, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Government was established in Wangye Temple. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was renamed the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Inner Mongolia has been a homeland for northern ethnic minorities in China, featuring a diverse and integrated cultural landscape. It is the first ethnic minority autonomous region established in China. As China’s northern gateway, it connects to the vast domestic consumer market inward, links with Russia and Mongolia outward, and reaches the European continent via land routes through Russia and Mongolia.
The tourism resources of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region mainly consist of the “Six Wonders”: grasslands, ancient relics, deserts, lakes, forests and folk customs. Forest landscapes are mainly distributed in the Greater Khingan Mountains. Folk custom tours include Mongolian singing and dancing, the “Three Masculine Arts” of Mongolian men — horse racing, wrestling and archery — as well as the Nadam Festival. Scenic spots and historical sites include the Five Pagoda Temple, Dazhao Temple, Zhaojun Tomb, Xilituzhao Temple, Wusutuzhao Temple and White Pagoda in Hohhot; Wudangzhao Temple and Meidai Temple in Baotou; the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan in Ejin Horo Banner; the Eren Basin Cretaceous Dinosaur National Geopark in Erenhot; Yanfu Temple in Alxa Left Banner; Upper Capital of Liao Dynasty, Middle Capital of Liao Dynasty and Daming Pagoda in Chifeng; and Gaxian Cave in Oroqen Autonomous Banner.
